Spectra1

Spectra1 is a stand-alone real-time spectrum analyzer (RTA) for your PC, using your Windows soundcard.
All you need is a computer with a soundcard!

What is a spectrum analyzer? (RTA)

A spectrum analyzer is something that allows you to view the intensity of the various frequencies in audio content. This is useful for trying to determine if there is a frequency that is too loud or too quiet in a mix.
Spectra1 allows real-time monitoring of any record line from your soundcard. With its 62 band display, you can visualize the frequency content of your audio with excellent resolution.

What is a spectrograph?

Basically it is a "history" of frequency data drawn out in color intensity over time. The bottom half is the lower frequency content, and the upper half is the higher. It represents the full spectrum. The louder the frequency content, the "brighter" the color intensity. This is useful if you feel you may have too much harmonic content in a certain frequency band - you would see a strip of high intensity color in that particular location as opposed to a uniform distribution of intensities. This is also true for finding lacking frequencies in audio content - you would see dark bands.

Here is a good example of the spectrograph. An MP3 is loaded into Winamp which has it's EQ set to artifically boost 370hz to 600hz... Then we toggled the EQ on and off. On the spectrograph you can see the intensity of that band area increase:
